[영어번역연습]시골쥐 서울 구경

 

시골쥐가 서울 구경을 올라 왔습니다. 처음 길이라 허둥허둥하면서, 짐차를 두 번 세 번이나 갈아타고, 간신히 서울까지 왔습니다. 직행차를 타면 빨리 온다는 말도 들었지만, 그래도 짐차를 타야 먹을 것도 많고 사람의 눈에 들킬 염려도 적으므로, 짐차를 타고 온 것이었습니다.

기차가 한강 철교를 건널 때에는 어떻게 무서운 소리가 크게 나는지, 어지러워서 내려다보지도 왔지마는, 서울까지 다 왔다는 말을 들을 때에는 기쁜 것 같고 시원한 것 같으면서도, 가슴이 울렁울렁하였습니다.

남대문 정거장에 내려서, 자아 인제 어디로 가야 되나 하고 망설거리고 섰노라니까,

“여보, 여보!”

하고, 뒤에서 부르는 소리가 들렸습니다. 보니까, 이름은 몰라도 역시 자기와 같은 쥐이므로 할아버지나 만난 것처럼 기뻐서,

 

A country mouse has come to visit Seoul. Since it was my first time on the road, I was in a hurry and changed trucks two or three times, and finally made it to Seoul. I had heard that it would get there faster if I took the direct car, but I still had to take the baggage car because there was more to eat and less worry about being seen by people, so I took the baggage car.
When the train crossed the Han River railroad bridge, there was a loud scary sound. I was so dizzy that I couldn't even look down, but when I heard that they had arrived all the way to Seoul, I felt happy and cool, but my heart sank.
I got off at Namdaemun Station and stood there hesitating, wondering where I should go now.
“Honey, honey!”
And I heard a voice calling from behind. Looking at him, even though he doesn't know his name, he was happy as if he had met his grandfather since he was a rat just like him.

 

 

“처음 뵙습니다만, 길을 좀 알려 주십시오. 시골서 처음 와 놓아서 그럽니다.”
하고, 애걸하듯이 물었습니다.
“글쎄, 처음부터 당신이 시골서 처음 온 양반인 줄 짐작했습니다. 서울 구경하러 올라오셨구려?”
“네에, 죽기 전에 한번 서울 구경좀 해 보려고, 그래 벼르고 별러서, 인제 간신히 오기는 왔지만, 와 보니 하도 어마어마하여 어디가 남쪽인지 어디가 북쪽인지 분간 못하겠습니다그려……. 우선 여관을 정해야겠는데 어느 여관이 좋은지 알 수가 있어야지요. 첫째 그놈의 고양이 없는 여관이라야 안 합니까……?”

 

 

“This is my first time meeting you, but please tell me the way. “It’s because it’s my first time coming from the countryside.”
He asked as if begging.
“Well, I guessed from the beginning that you were someone new to the countryside. “I guess you came up to see Seoul?”
“Yes, I wanted to see Seoul before I die, so I barely came here on a whim, but when I got here, it was so huge that I couldn’t tell which was south and which was north…” … . First, I need to decide on an inn, and I need to know which inn is good. First of all, shouldn’t it be an inn without that damn cat…? … ?”

 

 

“그럼, 여관으로 갈 것 없이 나하고 우리 집으로 갑시다그려. 그럼 돈도 들 염려없고, 고양이도 감히 오지 못하는 집이니까요. 뺑 돌아가면서 쇠로 된 양옥집이니까요.”
“예? 양옥집이어요? 훌륭한 집에 계십니다그려. 서울왔다가 양옥집 구경도 할 겸 그럼 댁에 가서 폐를 끼칠까요.”
“폐가 무슨 폐예요. 자아, 나를 따라오셔요. 까닥하면 길을 잃어버립니다.”
시골 쥐는 이제야 마음을 놓고, 서울 쥐의 뒤를 따라섰습니다.

 

 

“Then, instead of going to the inn, let’s go to my house with me. Then you don't have to worry about spending money, and it's a house that even cats don't dare come to. “It’s a Western-style house made of iron that rotates around.”
"yes? Is it a Western-style house? You have a great home. “I’m going to come to Seoul and look at a Western-style house, so why don’t I go to your house and cause trouble?”
“What kind of lungs are they? Hey, follow me. “If you mess up, you’ll get lost.”
The country mouse finally relaxed and followed in the footsteps of the Seoul mouse.

 

 

“저기, 소리를 뿌우뿡 지르면서 달아나는 것이 저것이 자동차라는 것이랍니다. 다리 부러진 사람이나, 앉은뱅이나, 그렇지 않으면 중병 든 사람이나, 타고 다니는 것이지요. 저기 잉잉 울면서 집채만한 것이 달아나는 것은 전차라는 것입니다. 늙은이나 어린애나 아이 밴 여자들이 타고 다니는 것이지요. 돈 오전만 내면 거진 십 리나 되는 데까지 태워다 주는 거예요. 우리도 저것을 타고 갔으면 좋으련만, 우리는 타면 곧 밟힐 테니까, 그래서 못 타지요”
“아이고, 구경삼아 걸어가는 것이 좋습니다. 그런데, 지금 어디 불이 났습니까, 난리가 났습니까? 왜 사람들이 저렇게 황급히 뛰어갑니까?”

 

“Look, that thing running away screaming is a car. Even people with broken legs, cripples, or other serious illnesses can ride on it. That thing the size of a house running away, crying, is a tram. Old people, children, and women with children ride them. If you just pay the morning fee, they will give you a ride as far as 10 miles away. “I wish we could ride that too, but if we do, we’ll get trampled right away, so we can’t.”
“Oh my, it’s better to just walk around to see the sights. By the way, is there a fire or chaos now? “Why do people run in such a hurry?”
